Newbury Fact File
Newbury formed after the Norman Conquest and was originally known as 'New Burgh'.
In 1640 the first Baptist church was founded in the town.
Industries in the eighteenth century included malting and brick-making.
The stocks at Newbury were last used in 1872 as a punishment for drunkenness.
The town was presented with its own coat of arms in 1948, depicting Newbury Castle and a graphic representation of the River Kennet. The castle was built in the middle of the twelfth century but is thought to have been destroyed shortly after.
