Reading Fact File
Reading is the county town of Berkshire, though historically it was Abingdon.
It is thought the name 'Reading' is derived from the Anglo-Saxon tribe 'Readingas'.
The area has been occupied since Roman times due to its position on the River Thames.
Henry I founded Reading Abbey in 1121 and is actually buried within the grounds. The abbey was destroyed in 1538 during the dissolution of the monasteries.
One of the country's largest music festivals is held in Reading.
