Wokingham Fact File
The name of 'Wokingham' is derived from 'Wocca's People's Home', Wocca being a Saxon chieftan ruling in the area. Lands at Woking in Surrey and Wokefield in Berkshire were also owned by Wocca. Up until Victorian times the village was called 'Oakingham' but was renamed 'Wokingham' by the Wheelwright family.
A town charter was granted in 1583 by Elizabeth I.
In the medieval period, the town was noted for its bell foundry and in Tudor times for silk production. A number of the original cottages that housed the looms still survive in Rose Street. They are characterised by high ceilings.
Both Cavaliers and Roundheads made raids on the town in the eighteenth century.
Buckhurst Manor house is now 'St. Anne's Manor' and has been converted to a hotel.
