Hungerford Fact File
The first documented evidence for the existence of Hungerford was in 1108 and refers to the church of Hungerford being assigned to the Abbey of Bec-Hellouin in Normandy.
The manor of Hungerford passed between various Duchies of Leicester and Lancaster and the Crown between the eleventh and fourteenth centuries. The manor passed to John of Gaunt (a name that is strongly associated with the town today) in 1362.
In 1810, the Kennet and Avon Canal was opened, bringing prosperity of the town from trade via Hungerford wharf. The canal trade ended due to the opening of Brunel's Great Western Railway to Bristol in 1841. Today the canal has been restored and reopened for tourism.
