Maidenhead Fact File
In the thirteenth century, Maidenhead was originally known as Maidenhythe, which means 'new wharf'. The town sprang up as a result of a new bridge over the Thames, which diverted the Great West Road (A4) across it. The area of Maidenhead town centre was originally called 'South Ellington' and is recorded in the Domesday Book as 'Ellington' in the hundred of Beynhurst.
Maidenhead's Greyhound inn was where King Charles I saw his children for the last time before he was executed in 1649.
In 1838, the Great Western Railway arrived at Maidenhead, and as a result, Isambard Kingdom Brunel built a railway bridge across the Thames, which has the flattest and widest brick built arches in the world.
